how to make puppy chow - no bake dessert

Hi friend!

We’re excited to share one of our favorite treats with you today! Puppy chow, also called muddy buddies depending on where you live, is a classic dessert that most people will instantly recognize, know and love.

Recently one of our favorite restaurants started serving puppy chow as a dessert option with their kids meals and it inspired us to get into the kitchen and make a batch (or two!) of our own!

What Is Puppy Chow Made of?

Puppy chow is a dessert treat made with just a few simple ingredients. The classic base is Chex cereal, which is tossed in a mixture of melted peanut butter and chocolate (and sometimes butter) and then tossed in a coating of powdered sugar.

How To Make Puppy Chow

Making puppy chow requires just a few simple steps:

  • Combine peanut butter and chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in short intervals until the chocolate is melted. Some recipes call for butter in addition to peanut butter and chocolate but I don’t think it’s necessary.
  • In a large bowl, combine Chex cereal and melted chocolate mixture.
  • Let mixture cool 15-30 minutes and then toss in powdered sugar. If you toss in the powdered sugar while the melted chocolate is still warm, it will absorb all of the powdered sugar and you’ll end up with puppy chow that is way to sweet.

Puppy Chow FAQs

Can I use a different cereal for puppy chow?

If you don’t have Chex cereal, you could try using Crispix!

Is puppy chow gluten-free?

Yes! As long as you use rice chex, this dessert is gluten-free.

Can I use milk chocolate in puppy chow?

You can use whatever type of chocolate you have available, but since you’re adding a lot of powdered sugar to the outside, I find that dark chocolate works better so that the dessert doesn’t become overly sweet.

How do I store puppy chow?

Store at room temperature in an airtight container for up to a week – if it lasts that long!
