Take grilled cheese to the next level by making pizza grilled cheese! Stuffed with pepperonis and served with a marinara dipping sauce.

how to make pizza grilled cheese with marinara dipping sauce

My older two love this pizza grilled cheese sandwich. It’s quick and easy to make and a fun alternative to pizza. We make it for lunch at least once a week around here.

How To Make Pizza Grilled Cheese Step by Step

Making a pizza grilled cheese really couldn’t be easier. Just grab some bread, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni and pizza sauce for dipping.

  • Optional step- coat the outsides of the bread with mayo or butter. We usually skip this step because we’re lazy but it can help give you a nice, crispy golden brown outside.
  • Sprinkle shredded cheese on top of one slice of bread and top with pepperonis.
  • Add second slice of bread on top.
  • Place on a griddle or in a pan and cook until the outsides are golden brown and the cheese is melted.

Pizza Grilled Cheese FAQs

What kind of bread should I use?

We use sliced sandwich bread but you can use whatever you like! Freshly baked Italian bread from the bakery would be great. You could even really take it up a notch and use garlic bread!

Don’t have bread? Try making it in a tortilla and turning it into a pizza quesadilla instead!

Can I use a different cheese?

Sure can! We love shredded mozzarella but we’ve also used Colby jack. Try pepper jack for a little kick or muenster or havarti if you like those. You could even get really fancy and use slices of fresh mozzarella if you want.

Can I add more to the sandwich?

Absolutely! Feel free to add some thinly sliced peppers, onions, a handful of baby spinach, some fresh basil, sliced sausage instead of pepperoni, etc! This is just a basic beginning.

Or try brushing the outsides of the bread with oil and sprinkling with a little Italian seasoning or oregano. Or grating some parmesan cheese over the top once it’s done cooking!

What if I don’t have pizza sauce?

Spaghetti sauce will work! Or try this easy recipe for homemade pizza sauce.

What to serve with pizza grilled cheese?

We make this a really simple meal by adding fresh fruits and veggies on the side!
