This easy homemade salsa is made with Roma tomatoes and comes together quickly in the food processor. Plus it tastes better the longer it sits in the fridge!
Hi friends!
This summer we’ve been playing around with all the fresh tomatoes available to find our favorite recipe for homemade salsa.
This salsa is super easy to make at home, especially with a food processor which pretty much does all the work for you. And it tastes better the longer it sits in the fridge so we like to make a batch and enjoy it all week long with our favorite chips!
How To Make Easy Homemade Salsa
Here’s what you need to make this salsa:
- Roma tomatoes – these hold up best texture-wise. You’ll need to quarter them and then cut out the core and seeds or your salsa will get too watery.
- Onion – we use both white and green in this recipe. We actually prefer it with just a little bit of white onion and more green but you can experiment with both kinds to find which balance you like best.
- Jalapeno- This is optional, feel free to leave it out, or add an extra one for even more spice.
- Lime juice- Fresh lime juice is best!
- Cilantro – You can control the amount you add but don’t skip it! It adds tons of flavor.
- Garlic- We opt for just a little bit of garlic because more than that and it seems overpowering to use, but if you love garlic, feel free to add more.
- Salt – Add it slowly. You can always add more but you can’t get it out once you have too much in there 🙂
- Sugar – You can add a pinch of sugar at the end to help balance all the flavors!

Homemade Salsa FAQs
What is homemade salsa made of?
Ingredients may vary slightly but for our salsa we use Roma tomatoes, onion, green onion, jalapeno, cilantro, lime juice, garlic and salt.
Should homemade salsa be cooked?
We don’t cook ours but this is commonly done, especially in restaurants. It’s a good way to help a little bit of the extra liquid evaporate and it also cooks the onions slightly which can help mellow the flavor.
Do you peel tomatoes for salsa?
It’s not necessary to peel the tomatoes before using them in salsa.
How long does homemade salsa last?
You can store homemade salsa safely in the fridge for 4-6 days.
Can you freeze homemade salsa?
You can, but it’s not my favorite. Freezing and thawing tends to make it more watery, but if you’re not opposed to draining the extra liquid then freezing can definitely be an option.
