Learn how to make easy homemade guacamole. Kids can make a simple, basic version or try spicing it up to serve to adults!

My kids get super excited whenever I load up on ripe avocados because they know that means it’s time to make homemade guacamole.
This is the perfect recipe for even young kids because it involves simple things like mashing, squeezing and stirring. And bigger kids can practice their knife skills by safely cutting open the avocadoes and dicing things like cilantro, tomatoes and jalapenos.
How To Make Homemade Guacamole Step By Step
To make the most basic guacamole you really only need avocados, lime juice and salt.
- Carefully cut the avocados in half length-wise around the pit.
- Use a knife or gently push on the back of the avocado skin to pop the pit out.
- Use a spoon or fork to slide between the avocado and the skin to remove the green avocado and place in a bowl.
- Use a masher or a fork to smash the avocado. You can leave it chunky or make it more smooth.
- Carefully cut a lime in half and squeeze the juice into the bowl.
- Add salt, stir to combine and taste.
If you want to jazz up your guacamole a little bit, try adding things like:
- Minced cilantro
- Minced jalapeno
- Diced tomatoes
- Diced onions

Homemade Guacamole FAQs
Is guacamole just mashed avocado?
Basically yes. It’s mashed avocados that can then be mixed with things like lime juice, tomatoes, onions, chilis etc to make a dip or topping.
Why does guacamole turn brown?
The avocado flesh turns from green to brown when it reacts with oxygen in the air. When you make guacamole, the top layer that is still exposed to air will gradually turn brown.
How to keep guacamole from turning brown
Everyone seems to have an opinion about the best way to keep guacamole from turning brown. Some say pressing a layer of plastic wrap down over the top and then covering the container with a lid will help prevent browning. Others say that doesn’t really help much.
Another popular method is to add 1/2 in of water to the container you store your guac in. When you’re ready to eat again, just drain the water. However, I don’t personally use this method because there are some safety concerns.
The Kitchn tested several of the most popular tricks for keeping guacamole from browning and they found the best option is to squeeze a layer of lime or lemon juice over the top before storing.
Is it ok to eat guacamole after it turns brown?
It might not be appealing to look at after it turns brown but it is still totally safe to eat – as long as it has been stored in the fridge and is less than 3 days old.
How to jazz up guacamole
In addition to things like onion, tomato, lime, salt and peppers, you could also try adding other things to your guacamole. Stir in some plain greek yogurt or blend in some green peas for extra protein. Mix in some diced mango or pineapple plus jalapeno for a sweet and spicy guacamole.
Or try mixing in crab meat for a seafood twist! Grilled corn or even diced bacon would also be tasty additions.
What to make with guacamole
Guacamole obviously pairs well with anything related to tacos, burrito, burrito bowls etc but here are a few other ways to use it:
- Guacamole deviled eggs
- Add it to toast with a fried egg or put it on a sandwich
- Make guacamole salad dressing
- Try guacamole stuffed potato skins
