Making homemade applesauce is so easy. If you haven’t tried it already you’ll wish you would have tried it sooner! This is a great way to use up apples when they’re in sale in the Fall or after you’ve gone apple picking.
You don’t even have to worry about peeling them! Blending in the blender makes it so smooth you’ll never notice them.
How to make homemade applesauce step by step
To make homemade applesauce just follow these simple steps:
- Grab 7-8 of your favorite apples.
- Cut around the cores to remove them and add the large chunks to the instant pot.
- Add 1/2 cup water and cinnamon if desired.
- Cook for 10 minutes.
- Carefully transfer the apples to a blender and blend until smooth.
- If it’s too thick, add a little bit of the liquid from the pot until you reach your desired consistency.

Ingredients
- 7–8 large apples, cored
- 1/2 cup water
- cinnamon, optional
Instructions
- Remove cores and place large chunks of apple in the instant pot.
- Add water and cinnamon.
- Cook for 10 minutes and let the pressure release naturally.
- Ladle apples into a blender and blend until smooth. Add cooking liquid to thin to the desired consistency.
- Cool and eat.
- Store in an airtight container in the fridge.
Notes
To cook on the stove, bring water and apples to a boil, cover and reduce heat to simmer. Let simmer 20-25 minutes, then blend.
You can also do this with pears or add berries to your apples for a combination fruit sauce!

If your applesauce turns slightly brown it’s still safe to eat but you can add 2-3 tsp lemon juice to the mixture when making your applesauce to help prevent browning.

My personal opinion is you can use any variety but some of the most commonly recommended ones are Fugi, McIntosh, Golden Delicious, Honeycrisp and Jonagold.

It depends on the size of the apples but generally, 2-3 medium-large apples make about 1 cup of applesauce.
