how to make french toast with cookie cutters or a waffle iron

French toast was one of my favorite breakfasts growing up. It’s so easy to make and I have great memories of watching my mom make it for me. She always used a metal pie tin to mix the eggs and milk.

French toast is pretty easy to make and you can make it in a skillet on the stove, but if you’re making a larger amount, try using a griddle – like you use to make pancakes!

Kids can choose between just using full pieces of bread or making it a little more fun by using cookie cutters to cut out fun shapes. But my all-time favorite hack is to use a waffle iron to make French toast- so easy, no flipping required!

How To Make French Toast Step By Step

Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of how to make French toast:

  • Crack eggs into a shallow pan or tray.
  • Add milk (plus vanilla/cinnamon if desired) and whisk to combine.
  • Dip bread into egg mixture on one side, then flip to coat the other side.
  • Place in a hot pan and let cook 2 minutes.
  • Then flip and cook on the other side.
  • Repeat until no egg mixture remains.
  • Serve topped with yogurt, peanut butter, syrup, fruit etc.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 – 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 – 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 8 slices of bread

Instructions

  1. In a wide, shallow pan combine eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla and whisk to combine.
  2. Soak bread in egg mixture for about 5 minutes so both sides are coated.
  3. Add butter to a skillet or griddle at medium heat.
  4. Add dipped bread slices to pan and cook 3-4 minutes. Flip and cook another 3-4 minutes.
  5. Repeat until all the egg mixture is gone.
  6. Serve warm with fruit, syrup, yogurt etc.

Notes

If you want to, use cookie cutters to cut the bread into shapes before dipping or try cooking on a waffle iron for about a minute instead of in a pan.

How To Make French Toast FAQs

What is French toast usually made of?

French toast is basically just bread dipped in a mixture of eggs and milk and then fried in a pan. You can use whatever type of bread you want, everything from sandwich bread to something richer like challah.

How long should French toast be soaked?

Most people, myself included, give the bread a quick dip on both sides and throw it in the pan. This works just fine but if you really want the egg mixture to be absorbed down into the middle of the bread, try letting your bread soak in the mixture for 5-10 minutes before cooking.

Do you cook French toast in oil or butter?

I definitely recommend putting butter in your pan before cooking French toast. It adds a richness that oil does not that pairs well with French toast.

Do you have to dry out bread for French toast?

No, you don’t have to. However, slightly stale bread does absorb the egg mixture a bit better so if you know you’re going to be making French toast, feel free to leave your bread out the night before.

How do I know when my French toast is done?

When you cut the French toast it should be set in the center, not running. Typically this takes 3-4 minutes per side over medium heat.

What toppings should I put on French toast?

My favorite toppings are yogurt, syrup or fresh fruit. For a really easy fruit compote, you can microwave frozen blueberries, add a splash of maply syrup if you want and then smash them up. A dusting of powdered sugar is also a traditional topping.

Why add milk to French toast?

There’s actually science behind this and you can read all about the reason milk is so important in French toast here. Their recommended ratio is 3 eggs to 1 cup milk. I usually use 4 eggs and 1 cup milk.

Can you make French toast ahead of time and reheat?

Yes! You can reheat French toast in the microwave or in a pan. My kids also eat it cold for lunch.

What do you eat with French toast?

Most traditional breakfast foods pair well with French toast. We suggest trying it with:

  • Oven Baked Bacon
  • A Strawberry Smoothie
  • Fresh Squeezed Orange Juice
  • Homemade Energy Bars
  • Pancakes from Scratch
